Small Business Growth: Tracking Your Advertising and Marketing

Many small business owners are unsure of how well their advertising is working. To shed some light on these issues for small business owners, eBridge Advertising a leading online ad agency with more than 40,000 customers surveyed more than 13,000 small business owners on a multitude of business issues.

The survey was created by eBridge to determine the need for what it calls Performance Advertising. Measuring dollars per response to advertising, as well as recording how many calls, walk ins or website visits, are aspects of performance advertising.

The survey found 63 percent of small businesses don’t know how many customers they gain through every $100 worth of advertising. Another 64 percent said customer phone calls are the best way to measure the effectiveness of their advertising.

So, how can small businesses start getting clear, accurate answers? For starters, they can attend BIA/Kelsey’s Summit for Directional Media Strategies 2011 (DMS ‘11), which will discuss the latest forms of small business marketing and advertising.

“SMB marketers now require a complex mix of products and services to drive leads, measure performance, manage customer relationships and engage customers,” said Chairman Charles Laughlin, senior vice president and program director, BIA/Kelsey.

The DMS ‘11 program will give attendees the opportunity to hear from more than 50 senior executives in the small business marketing field.

Facebook's Marketing Reach for Small Businesses Continues to Grow

Social media marketing is moving from “nice-to-have, to must-have for small businesses,” according to Julie Fajgenbaum, vice president of brand and social media, American Express OPEN.

After screening 11,000 entrants, Facebook and American Express OPEN named five winners for the “Facebook Big Break for Small Business” contest. The five winners will head to Facebook headquarters in Palo Alto, California to become trained on uses of social media for small businesses. The winners will also pocket $20,000 to spark the growth of their social media presence.

“These five businesses have great potential and will make excellent case studies for the millions of small business owners out there who are looking to accelerate their social media marketing efforts in order to grow,” said Fajgenbaum.

Facebook will train the winners in a classroom setting about how to utilize Facebook Pages, Ads, Social Plugin, and how to improve their current Facebook page. Training will also include learning how to maximize the power of Facebook for marketing purposes and how to target new customers.

Adele Cooper, director of global customer marketing and communications at Facebook, says all companies can benefit from Facebook and the marketing prowess its possesses.

One of Facebook’s most useful and successful tools is its Facebook fan pages. Companies want to continue add more and more features to those pages, but it is hard to do that without the help of an IT professional.

Realizing the growth of Facebook marketing, Shortstack, a company that helps small businesses design better Facebook pages for free, launched late last year.

Shortstack created a simple tool for companies to create customizable tabs for their Facebook fans pages, allowing visitors more ways to explore the page, according to the website.

“Fans are able to do more than just comment on a photo or write on a wall,” said Jim Belosic, Shortstack president, in a recent conversation with ITTechDaily. “They can enter contests, sign up for company newsletters and watch videos — all through a very simple user interface.”

According to the website, Shortstack provides its service for free to businesses with Facebook fan pages with fewer than 2,000 “likes.” Shortstack offers rates from $15 to $300 a month depending on the services requested and for companies with larger fan bases.

Do You Have Daily Goals?

http://www.bizfilings.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/TO-DO-iStock_000010166101Small.jpgIt’s easy to fill your day with things that keep you busy. But is what you’re doing making a meaningful contribution to your company’s future?

Depending on how you structure your day, the answer might surprise you. But with a little technique I learned from one of the world’s most famous speakers, Zig Ziglar, you can easily keep yourself and your small business on track and moving forward.

Zig’s advice is incredibly easy, and takes only minutes a day to accomplish:

Write down the six most important things you need to do today.

Do this first thing in the morning, or plan ahead and write tomorrow’s list before you go to bed.

This gives you a clear picture of your day and gets you thinking about what’s most important before you get swept up into the day.

What you’re really working on is short-term goals. When you integrate them with your long-term goals, you can really get going on building a successful business!

Hiring in Small Businesses is Slowly Coming Around

Small business hiring numbers have increased since last year, however job creation continues to grow at a cautious pace. CareerBuilder’s nationwide survey of more than 1,400 small businesses shows that small businesses and large businesses are hiring at different speeds.

In small businesses with 50 or less employees, hiring full-time, permanent staff has increased 14 percent — raising the number to 20 percent. However, small businesses are moving slower than large businesses.

Forty-six percent of larger businesses are now hiring full-time, permanent employees — up 38 percent from last year.

“There was a chill effect on confidence levels coming out of the recession, and small businesses are still waiting to see how the market will unfold before committing to fully expanded staffs,” said Matt Ferguson, CEO of CareerBuilder.

To recover from the recession, many have stated that the economy needs millions of jobs to be formed, which may take some time given that June saw an increase of just 18,000 more jobs created. According to the National Federation of Independent Business, small business owners continue to be pessimistic about the economy.

That pessimism reflects in the numbers, while larger businesses seem to have more faith in the economy turning around.

More Small Business Lending Brings SBLF Total to $337 Million

With the help of the recent $214 million that the U.S. Department of Treasury dispersed to 17 community banks, there are now 23 community banks that have received a total of $337 million from the Small Business Lending Fund (SBLF).

“Continuing to unlock access to capital for Main Street entrepreneurs is vital to strengthening economic growth and job creation in local communities across our nation,” said Rosie Rios, treasurer of the United States.

Employing nearly half of the nation, and accounting for approximately 60 percent of gross job creation, small businesses need the funding to continue to grow. The SBLF was put together by President Barack Obama’s administration to help small businesses get the money they need to hire, and to fund new projects.

Adding another small business to the list of SBLF beneficiaries was approved by the U.S. Treasury Department, granting approval to the First Savings Financial group to acquire an investment of $17,120,000.

With 12 offices in Indiana, First Savings Bank will receive the capital in the form of preferred stock of the company.

Has Your Small Business Fallen into the Trap of Automatic Imitation?

http://www.bizfilings.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/Rock-Paper-Scissors-iStock_000005283216Small.jpgThere’s a chance you may be imitating your competitors without even knowing it.

How is this possible? It all starts with what researchers call “automatic imitation” — an unconscious mimicking of the behavior and gestures of others. It turns out that findings based on a simple game have implications about why we behave the way we do on every level of our existence.

In his recent article, Rock-paper-scissors Gamers “Mimic Each Other,” Jason Palmer (Science and technology reporter, BBC News), tells us that, “players of the rock-paper-scissors game unconsciously mimic the actions of their opponents, a study suggests. The result is surprising because advantage is gained in the game by acting differently from opponents. The authors say that in-built social aspects of behavior must therefore be considered in economic and game theory. At the root of the research is the idea that humans are prone to mimicking the behavior and gestures of others — an idea called “automatic imitation.”

Now, let’s turn our attention to our business. Are we imitating, or are we innovating? How about our leadership philosophy, our marketing and how we handle all of the relationships in our lives — both professional and personal?

If being different than our “opponents” gives us an advantage, then we need to be consciously aware of breaking our unconscious automatic imitation tendencies.

Professor Wolfgang Prinz, of the Max Planck Institute for Psychological Research in Germany, told BBC News that, “the fact that there is a spontaneous and initially irresistible tendency to copy does not say that this tendency cannot be overcome, and hence resisted, after a short while.”

But what if your competitor is super successful? What if they are of the highest integrity, offering quality products and services? Well, it’s OK to use them as model — imitation is the highest form of flattery. But at some point we’ve got to start defining our company in a way that’s unique to us.

Both Apple and PC based computers have similar functions — up to a point — but ask anyone who is brand loyal to either side, and they’ll have a laundry list of the differences that make one platform their favorite.

At the end of the day, whether you stand out or blend into the small business crowd is up to you.

Small Businesses Can Fight Against Drug Use

Always looking to fight drug use and crime, the United States government appreciates all efforts to help those who grow up while surrounded by a cloud of drug use and criminal activity. The White House recently recognized Milwaukee-based nonprofit small business, Safe & Sound, for their dedication to reducing drug use and rebuilding neighborhoods.

“This program is a unique, effective and shining example of how community efforts can reduce drug use and its consequences,” said Gil Kerlikowske, White House director of national drug control policy.

President Barack Obama referenced the Milwaukee small business in his National Drug Control Strategy. Barbara Notestein, executive director of Safe & Sound, says that her entity is the only one nationwide and hopes to spread her idea across the country.

While Safe & Sound is a small business fighting against drug abuse, it has been found small businesses are most vulnerable to drug and alcohol abuse by employees, according to EasySmallBusinessHR.com.

According to the web site, small businesses are least likely to test for drug abuse, and about 90 percent of employees with alcohol or illegal drug dependence work for small or medium-sized businesses.

The website encourages small businesses to create their own drug-free workplace programs.
