It's Time for Small Business to Go Mobile

Smartphones, tablets and laptops have made it increasingly easier to for small business owners to communicate with their employees. A new study by The Business Journals finds 71 percent of small and mid-sized businesses are “mobile businesses,” allowing for employees to produce in or out of the office.

Of those surveyed, 59 percent believe that such technology is vital to their success, and the facts back it up. Sales at mobile companies ($10.8 million), almost doubled sales of those who are not mobile ($5.7 million).

The study found that 64 percent of mobile small and mid-sized business owners spend more than eight hours per day on their computer, smartphone, or iPad connected to their business. Thirty-eight percent even spend up to 11 hours on their devices per day.

Spending all of that time on their devices, small business owners want the best product. According to the International Business Times, Apple’s iPhone is the cream of the crop. They believe that what sets the iPhone apart is Apple’s App Store, which has approximately 425,000 apps from Apple and third-party developers.

Another superior aspect of the iPhone is iOS, Apple’s operating system. iPhone users have multiple ways to wield their iPhone, including the swipe, tap, pinch, and reverse-pinch, which allow for easy use.

Fantastic Free Cloud Apps, Part 1: DropBox

http://www.bizfilings.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/Cloud-iStock_000016439767Small.jpg
No matter what size your business, there are some extremely helpful apps for both Mac and PC platforms that are designed to serve you from high above in their own respective “cloud.” They can save you time and energy — not to mention lighten your virtual load — giving you access to notes, docs, pics, pdfs and web links from any computer, as well as many mobile devices.

At Your Fingertips
There’s no longer a need to carry around a flash drive or e-mail yourself a note or Web link. Since they live in the cloud, each of these apps can be accessed anywhere, at any time. They’re incredibly easy to use, and they’re free.

What is the “Cloud?”
According to CloudComputingDefined.com, cloud computing is, “internet-based computing whereby information, IT resources, and software applications are provided to computers and mobile devices on-demand.” In other words, you’re using a virtual hard drive that can be accessed from anywhere, instead of a local hard drive that’s physically connected to your computer or company’s network.

But enough of the technical, let’s learn more about the first app we’re highlighting in this series: DropBox.

Dropbox describes itself as, “a free service that lets you bring all your photos, docs, and videos anywhere. This means that any file you save to your Dropbox will automatically save to all your computers, phones and even the Dropbox website. Dropbox also makes it super easy to share with others, whether you’re a student or professional, parent or grandparent. Even if you accidentally spill a latte on your laptop, have no fear! You can relax knowing that Dropbox always has you covered, and none of your stuff will ever be lost.”

You can place your entire documents folder in DropBox. If it’s really large, you can buy more space to store more. One of the great aspects of this app is that you can set up a Public Folder, making it easy for multiple people to have access to the same file. This helps streamline the workflow whether you’re working on an annual report, or your next big marketing campaign. Writers, art directors, your accountant — even your customers can have easy access to what you want them to see or work on.

What Else Can DropBox Do?

  • Use it as your hard drive if you’ve run out of space on your computer. It’s portable, and always there when you need it
  • Store your iTunes media
  • Store company help files and policy documents
  • Use it as an additional way to back up your hard drive
  • Sync with your iPhone, iPad, Android or Blackberry device

Grow Your Small Business: Treat Your Company Like a Client

http://www.bizfilings.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/Growth-Sigh-iStock_000000795201Small.jpgAs a small business owner, have you ever noticed that it’s sometimes easier to get a clear idea on how to improve someone else’s businesses, as opposed to your own? When you’re immersed in the day-to-day workload and issues of your own company, it’s hard to be unbiased about your products, marketing and the obstacles that are holding you back. In other words, it’s easy to get caught up in the minutia and lose sight of the big picture.

So how do you attain a more objective view of your company? How do you dissect it to identify how you can improve on the weak points and grow your small business? The answer is simple, if you’re willing to look at things from a different perspective:

Pull your team together and tell them they have a new client to work for: themselves.

When an owner and his small business team take the time to look at their company from the outside in, things that have been “invisible” suddenly become easily detectable. Whether it’s communicating differently with their target market, changing a product, or finding ways to make their customer service better, taking a “global view” opens the door for improvement.

Taking this approach also helps you and your team see your company in the same way your customers and clients see you. Are they perceiving you in a way you’re happy with?

Just like you would work with a client or customer to determine their needs, your small business must occasionally dissect itself in order to determine its own needs so it can become stronger and grow. Often, this is can be effectively accomplished from the outside looking in.

Whether you’re an owner, or an employee, of a small business it’s important to remember that if you’re willing to take an honest look at your company, there’s always room for improvement. And the only investment is your time.

May your small business always experience abundance, growth and prosperity …

Small Businesses Receiving Assistance from Multiple Sources

Life preserver - iStock_000002090601SmallForming a company from the ground up can be challenging for any entrepreneur, but there is no shortage of tools available for a small business owner in want of some useful tips.

Functional Marketing LLC, a strategic marketing company, has released a free eBook useful to small business owners, which contains 40 pages of common mistakes and how to avoid them in order to keep any small business operational. Just sign up for their free e-mail newsletter to receive the book.

Why Most Small Businesses Fail: How to Avoid the Seven Deadly Mistakes Most Small Businesses Make, is available for free download from Functional Marketing and does not skimp on the tips.

“Many people who start a business just don’t understand the fundamentals,” said Dave Smith, CEO. “The biggest problems stem from wrong beliefs about starting and running a business. It’s not enough to have a good product and work hard. You have to work hard on the right things.”

Books providing small business aid is one thing but securing loan payments from the ever-tightening grasp of U.S. banks is another. Kiva.org, a microlending website is contributing to helping small businesses by establishing a new program which offers micro-loans to U.S. small businesses with the greatest needs.

Small Business Owners Receive Funding Aide From Obama Administration

Any small business owner who’s gone through the pains of forming a company, and now requires a loan to keep matters progressing, is having a harder time securing a bank loan. But a new website is helping small business owners in need connect with alternative funding sources.

SBAdirectloans.com works in conjunction with the Small Business Administration, which is a federal government agency. This agency provides loans that come with preferable terms and guidelines — without the consequence of defaulting.

“Small business owners right now are sick with worry over their business,” said Mike Robbins, SBA lending expert. “They simply don’t realize that a private lending professional can get them SBA-guaranteed funds in as little as a month. Even if every bank in their town says no, it’s still possible to get an SBA loan.”

According to an article published on Bankrate.com, the nation is still going through the financial crisis and banks are still refusing small business owners bank loans at a higher rate than usual.

Robbins said the Obama administration can be thanked for setting aside billions in entrepreneur aide.

Can Trade Shows Help Grow Your Small Business?

http://www.bizfilings.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/Trade-Show-iStock_000016851417Small.jpgTrade shows can help you grow a small business by offering great exposure to new and existing clients, give you insight as to what’s happening in your market, and provide the opportunity to learn a whole lot.

But these benefits come with a price. The cost to sign up as an exhibitor at most trade shows can be expensive, not to mention all of the collateral you’ll need to have a successful, engaging booth. Then there’s the time investment that goes along with being an exhibitor. Starting weeks (sometimes months) in advance, you’ve got to start planning and answering questions like:

  • How are you going to let customers know you’ll be there?
  • What kinds of giveaways and other collateral will you hand out, and who will produce them for you?
  • What’s your booth layout and design?
  • What will draw people to your booth?
  • What are your daily trade show sales goals, and how do you plan to meet them?
  • Does your small business have enough people to effectively staff your booth?

Before you can truly determine if a trade show can help your small business be more successful, two other questions must first be answered: (1) Can my company afford it? (2) Is this trade show relevant to my products or services?

If the answer to either of these questions is no, then that particular trade show is probably not right for you.

The Alternative Trade Show Plan
Have you thought about participating in a trade show as an attendee? This option can have many benefits — especially if it’s a show chock-full of businesses that your company typically provides services or products to. The “attendee alternative” is a great way to make connections with potential customers and gain insight into their needs. It also gives you a first-hand view of what customers are up to – all at a fraction of the cost of being an exhibitor.

It’s definitely a shift in perspective, and it can be a daunting task — not to mention exhausting — to attend an entire trade show on your own. If your company can swing it, bring another member of the team with you. Working with a team mate makes it easier to talk with more people, stay fresh and remain motivated.

Following Up
After you’ve schmoozed with as many businesses as possible and gathered collateral from their booths, it’s time to follow up. All the hard work and time you spent at that trade show comes down to how you finish.

If a company seemed “wow’d” by you, don’t assume that they’re automatically going to make contact. They’re exhausted from the show, and most likely busy getting back up to speed at work. Plus they may not need your services right now. Don’t let them forget you. Contact them in a way you think will be most effective.

These days, while everybody sends e-mails, I like to send a nice follow-up note. That’s right, a note that includes the use of ink from a pen — what a novelty! But it gets the customer’s attention, and makes them feel special. No matter how you decide to follow up, always remember to follow the golden rule: be pleasantly persistent without being a pest.

How to Get More Hits on Your Small Business Blog

http://www.bizfilings.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/Target-and-Arrows-FLIP-iStock_000014696471Small.JPGJust about any company can benefit from having a blog. In many cases, it can help grow your business by increasing sales or your client base. In all cases, it can raise the credibility of a company — especially when you’re providing relevant, high-quality content. But writing blog posts, even good ones, isn’t enough. You also need readers.

Fortunately, there are tools that can help you get more traffic on your blog, increasing exposure to your potential market. Here’s a list of tips and resources to help make your blog a successful one.

Understand categories and tags: from what they do, to how to use each most effectively. A little known fact (at least I didn’t know until my Web designer told me) is that if the categories and tags you’re using aren’t actually included in your body copy, they’re ineffective in driving traffic to your blog. Why? Because without keyword content to back them up, search engines don’t give any weight to your categories and tags. Wordpress can help give you a better understanding of categories and tags.

Choosing the best keywords. When we speak of keywords, we’re really talking about SEO (Search Engine Optimization). I recommend a two-step approach with keywords and key word phrases.

  • Write your article organically, using the language of your industry. Then enter all relevant keywords into your tags (and possibly your categories if it’s a recurring topic on your blog).
  • Utilize Market Samurai’s free keyword program to determine which keyword phrases pack the biggest punch. Which words, or phrases, are going to bring you the most traffic? Market Samurai has an excellent tutorial section in their “Dojo” on how to get up to speed with their program and SEO. Next, add the high-performing keywords to your content, tags and/or categories. This helps optimize your article so it can receive better visibility on Google and other search engines — which can bring you more traffic.

Top 5 Ways to Balance Your Life and Your Small Business

http://www.bizfilings.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/Work-Life-Balance-iStock_000015542766Small.jpgFinding balance is an ongoing process. And once we find it, it’s difficult to hold on to. These practical tips are meant to help keep you as close to balance as possible. When it comes down to it, our personal and professional lives are so intertwined that we cannot balance one without balancing the other.

  • Make appointments with yourself to exercise. Treat these appointments with the same respect you would if it were a meeting with a client or customer. Exercise not only improves your health, it also gives you energy and improves mental clarity. Can you think of a better way to make good decisions throughout your work day?
  • Take a break when you need one. Have you ever found yourself working really hard, but getting nowhere? When we hit the proverbial wall, pushing forward even harder is seldom the path to great accomplishment. A break, whether it’s five minutes or an entire day, can refresh your mind and your disposition.
  • Have a social life/family life. Taking time for actual human interaction that doesn’t have to do with your business is a critical element to a happy life (not to mention mental wellness). It’s tempting to put work in front of family time or friend time — especially when it’s our own business. But we are not computers! We need these interactions, and our family and friends need us!
  • Find your spiritual side. What do you do to connect with your spiritual side? If you have something that works for you, are you doing it enough? If you don’t, there are plenty of options — from meditation, to workshops, to attending church, to reading an inspirational book …
  • Goal setting. In a previous series, I discussed how to discover, define and set your goals — even in the face of obstacles. Personal and professional goals not only keep you on track, they also give you focus so you don’t waste your time on extraneous tasks.

This author knows first hand how difficult these techniques can sometimes be to accomplish. But they are possible. If you can make them a habit, your life and your business will thrive.

May your business always experience abundance, growth and prosperity …
