Employers in Indiana must comply with these state rules on providing service letters for former employees.

In Indiana, if requested in writing, former employees are entitled to a letter stating:

  • the nature and character of their services;
  • their employment dates; and
  • for what cause, if any, they quit or were fired.

However, the obligation to provide service letters does not apply to employers that do not require written recommendations or applications showing an applicant's qualifications or experience.
