Employers in North Carolina are subject to these state rules that restrict firing employees under certain circumstances.

North Carolina laws make it unlawful for an employer to:

  • retaliate because of an employee's jury service
  • deny equal employment opportunity
  • retaliate against an employee for filing a workers' compensation claim, wage claims, and other claims or complaints filed in good faith
  • retaliate against an employee who assists officials in making inspections of hazardous substances or who testifies in proceedings about those substances
  • violate protections for veterans or reservists
  • fire an employee for having wages withheld for child support, for requesting school visitation leave, or for genetic test results
