Employers in Virginia are subject to these state rules that restrict firing employees under certain circumstances.

Virginia laws make it unlawful for an employer to:

  • fire or discriminate against an employee because of jury service
  • deny equal employment opportunity
  • fire an employee who files safety or health complaints
  • fire an employee for filing for workers' compensation benefits or for refusing to take a polygraph test
  • violate protections for veterans or reservists
  • fire an employee for having wages withheld for child support, or for any one indebtedness other than child support
