Massachusetts Rules for Employing Minors
Employers in Massachusetts must conform with these state rules relating to the employment of minors.
In Massachusetts, minors between the ages of 14 and 16 may not be employed unless the employer procures and keeps on file an employment certificate.
Certificates may be obtained from the superintendent of schools or school committee of the town where the minor resides.
Employment certificates cannot be issued to minors under the age of 16 for employment in a:
- manufacturing or mechanical establishment
