As the economy continues to improve - with declines in unemployment, home foreclosures and small business bankruptcy filings - many small companies and entrepreneurs are planning to boost their marketing budgets in order to optimize brand exposure and reach consumers. Particularly among cash-strapped ventures, social media and search engines are likely the most cost-efficient marketing practices available, and recent data released by Econsultancy only bolsters this assertion. According to the 2011 State of Search Marketing Report, 84 percent of surveyed businesses report using Facebook, compared to only 73 percent last year. The study also noted the emergence of mobile marketing, as 79 percent of respondents cited the channel as being "highly significant" or "significant." But perhaps most telling point is the fact that companies are increasingly outsourcing these marketing tasks, opening new markets and opportunities for new startups. "More companies are outsourcing search and social media," the report reads. "Only 44 percent of companies are now carrying out search engine optimization in-house, compared to 51 percent last year. Only 55 percent are doing social media marketing in-house, compared to 62 percent a year ago."
