Entrepreneurs looking to start a business in the burgeoning green energy sector are likely to face stiff competition in coming years, as an increasing number of social, political and even economical factors are spurring demand for renewable alternatives. Most recently, skyrocketing energy prices have forced consumers to reconsider their reliance on fossil fuels, with many opting to instead bike to work, purchase an electric or hybrid vehicle and hire green energy consulting practices to lessen their power bills. The trend has also impacted the average workplace, as employees are more and more conscious of their companies' recycling efforts, power-saving strategies and printing policies. "In [International Data Corporation's] surveys, 61 percent of employees say that the environment is an important consideration when they decide to print or not," writes Andrew Winston in a post for Xerox. "But - and here's the big disconnect - only 16 percent of us actually act on those beliefs and avoid printing because of the environment." Accordingly, many small businesses have adopted green practices, hired energy consultants and developed green marketing strategies, the last of which is an industry that is expected to reach $3.5 billion by 2017.
