As a small business owner, have you ever noticed that it’s sometimes easier to get a clear idea on how to improve someone else’s businesses, as opposed to your own? When you’re immersed in the day-to-day workload and issues of your own company, it’s hard to be unbiased about your products, marketing and the obstacles that are holding you back. In other words, it’s easy to get caught up in the minutia and lose sight of the big picture.
So how do you attain a more objective view of your company? How do you dissect it to identify how you can improve on the weak points and grow your small business? The answer is simple, if you’re willing to look at things from a different perspective:
Pull your team together and tell them they have a new client to work for: themselves.
When an owner and his small business team take the time to look at their company from the outside in, things that have been “invisible” suddenly become easily detectable. Whether it’s communicating differently with their target market, changing a product, or finding ways to make their customer service better, taking a “global view” opens the door for improvement.
Taking this approach also helps you and your team see your company in the same way your customers and clients see you. Are they perceiving you in a way you’re happy with?
Just like you would work with a client or customer to determine their needs, your small business must occasionally dissect itself in order to determine its own needs so it can become stronger and grow. Often, this is can be effectively accomplished from the outside looking in.
Whether you’re an owner, or an employee, of a small business it’s important to remember that if you’re willing to take an honest look at your company, there’s always room for improvement. And the only investment is your time.
