By Brooke Miller Hall A 2010 study found that small business owners are one-and-a-half times more likely to fall victim to identity theft than the average person. Don’t let yourself become a statistic. We recently shared some general tips for avoiding identity fraud. Now let’s focus on how to protect the information you share and store electronically.
  • Anti-virus software and firewalls should be installed on all of your business computers and updated regularly.
  • If you have a wireless internet connection, make sure it’s secured and password protected.
  • Include numbers, symbols, lowercase and capital letters in your passwords. Don’t use the same password for everything. Mix it up. Be creative. And change passwords often.
  • Do not respond to e-mails asking to share your password or any other private information. Even if it looks like it is from your bank, it probably is not. If you’re unsure, call the bank (or other known, trusted source) directly to find out more.
  • Do not send confidential data via standard e-mail. Consider using an e-mail encryption program or at the very minimum, break up data into two or more e-mails so if one is intercepted the information cannot be abused.
  • Check e-mail downloads for viruses before opening, every time.
  • Consult with an informational technology specialist or data security professional to make sure your electronic data is adequately protected.
