When was the last time you took a real vacation - or even a real day off? Not a weekend getaway where you spent half the time on your laptop. Not a day trip to the winery where you closed deals during the drive. Genuine time off where you separated yourself from your business entirely. For a motivated entrepreneur, it can seem like impossibility. After all, you and your business are reflections of each other. The idea of stepping away from it all for a little while can feel like you’re stepping away from a part of yourself.
Desks and Details
The truth is, you owe it to yourself and your business to take that step occasionally. Everyone is human, and even the most dedicated are capable of being overwhelmed. For a small business owner, the stress can pile up quickly or sneak up on you. Either way, you may find it increasingly difficult to schedule a single day off, let alone an actual vacation.
Trust Your Staff
The best way to feel comfortable stepping away is by leaving your business in proficient hands. Hopefully, you work with a solid team that can keep things running smoothly in your absence. Ideally, you work with someone you consider a partner, someone capable of managing others and making decisions with confidence.
Chasing a Lifestyle
Building your business can be genuinely exciting, as fulfilling intellectually and emotionally as it can be financially. But you didn’t start your own business to work all the time, did you? Envisioning a lifestyle your desire and trying to actualize it is a worthy goal and nothing to be ashamed of. The thing is, you may find yourself continually putting off the lifestyle of your dreams. You may tell yourself you’re simply not ready and need to work more before you deserve a break.
Already Within Reach
You already deserve a break and your business deserves one too. If you’re feeling stressed or exhausted, you may start to perform at a sub-optimal level. Your business needs an energized and self-assured leader to keep things moving forward on the right track. Reach out and grab your lifestyle now. Of course, that doesn’t mean going into debt to buy a new sports car. It could mean a weekend trip to the beach or the mountains. It could mean a road trip with your children your favorite small town. You don’t need to spend loads of money to enjoy your success.
Time For Yourself
You just need to give yourself some time. Try to schedule a regular day off at least once a week. In addition, give yourself a real vacation occasionally. You’re your own boss and nobody is going to tell you when to take it, so you must take the responsibility and schedule yourself. Of course, spending quality time with friends and family is a great way to enjoy your time off. But don’t neglect some genuine time alone. Getting away from it all can have tremendous effects on your rest and rejuvenation.
Going on vacation and returning to your business working efficiently is like coming back from the restroom at a restaurant and finding your meal on the table. What was the last vacation you went on? Did you successfully manage to leave work behind? Let us know with a comment.
