Entrepreneurs are distinguished by their ability to think about the big-picture and embrace risk. Those who invest in the cost to incorporate and succeed in starting a business have a story to tell, one of inspiration. Whether that story ever gets translated to a book or not, well, that’s another issue. That requires discipline and perseverance. Is it worth it? Whether the small business owner is establishing a personal brand that could lead to other marketing opportunities, or demonstrating thought leadership that strengthens the value proposition of the business, the answer is an unequivocal “Yes!” “These days, the biggest challenge is getting the book written in the first place,” said Bill Newton, the founder of C-Suite Press. “Between an entrepreneur’s workload, travel, outside social interests, and family time, writing a book can fall to the back burner real quick. Once the book is written, there are plenty of publishing companies that can create a finished product and bring the book to market in a cost-effective manner. ” One excuse that does not pass muster, at least with Newton, is the entrepreneur’s belief that they are not a good writer. “That’s no excuse,” he said. “If you’ve been a successful entrepreneur, you’ve made some money. So spend some of it. That’s what ghost writers are for. With a little luck, a good editorial team can take your effort and turn it into the King’s English in short order.” He went on to offer some tips on writing a book “the easy way”:
  • “Open up a Word document and begin by gathering your thoughts in rough outline fashion. Make sure there’s a clearly defined storyline, or theme. Writing for the sake of it, without a purpose, gets you nowhere in a hurry.”
  • “Spend 15 minutes a day making notes. Stay disciplined and in 6-9 months you’ll have plenty of material. If you blog, it might get even easier. All your blogs over a period of time contain story material as well. And don’t overlook any of your social media activity.”
Following this plan should result in a rough draft. When the entrepreneur has finished this heavy lifting—manuscript in hand—he or she has two options. They can undertake the entire self-publishing process on their own, or have a publishing company take up the burden. In the case of the latter, the “right” professionals can take a manuscript and craft a final document, complete with revisions, edits and rewrites, if necessary. They can also design the cover and interior layout, and do all the final proofing before going to print. A finished book needs distribution. The entrepreneur should keep this in mind if hiring a publishing company, making sure that that company is experienced at placing the book in a brick and mortar bookstore and/or Amazon.com. The rewards of publishing a book are multi-faceted. The entrepreneur is suddenly an expert in the field, while the company gets the kind of credibility boost that can often tip the scales in its favor with prospective customers.
