California Laws Relating to Workplace Violence

A summary of California laws relating to weapons and conduct that impact workplace violence.

Effective January 1, 2012, it is a crime to openly carry an unloaded handgun (including in a motor vehicle), unless an exemption applies. Exemptions include:

  • peace officers
  • members of the military while parading or on duty
  • the carrying of handguns as merchandise
  • carrying at target ranges for the purpose of practice
  • licensed hunters engaged in hunting
  • licensed common carriers authorized to carry
  • persons within gun shows
  • persons authorized by California law to load handguns
  • persons within their own residence, place of business or on private property that one owns or leases
