District of Columbia employers must comply with these state rules regarding nursing in the workplace.
Employers must provide daily unpaid break periods to accommodate nursing mothers in the workplace so that a nursing mother can express breast milk for her child.
If a break period, paid or unpaid, is provided by the employer, the break period required for breastfeeding is to run concurrently with the existing break period.
Employers are not required to provide break periods for breastfeeding if doing so would create an undue hardship on the employers' operations.
Employers must also make reasonable efforts to provide a sanitary room or other location other than a bathroom or toilet stall, in close proximity to the work area, where an employee can express milk in privacy and security The location for expressing breast milk includes a childcare facility in close proximity to the employee's work location.
