Meal and Break Rules in Puerto Rico

Employers in Puerto Rico must comply with these state rules relating to meals and break times.

In Puerto Rico, the time set for a meal break must be at least one hour unless a shorter period is established by law.

The time intended for taking meals must begin no sooner than the end of the third nor later than the beginning of the sixth consecutive hour of work, so that employees will never be required to work more than five consecutive hours without pausing from work to eat.

The Secretary of Labor may approve shorter meal periods, and the stipulation for reducing the meal period may be effected through collective bargaining.

Employers who permit an employee to work during the time fixed for taking food will be obliged to pay double time.
