Employers in Iowa are subject to these state rules that restrict firing employees under certain circumstances.

Iowa laws make it unlawful for an employer to:

  • fail to allow employees time off to vote or for jury duty
  • require an employee to take a polygraph test
  • fire employees who file complaints about their exposure to hazardous chemicals
  • deny equal employment opportunity
  • violate protections for veterans or reservists
  • retaliate against an employee for filing a safety complaint
  • fire an employee for having wages garnished
