Employers in Michigan are subject to these state rules that restrict firing employees under certain circumstances.

Michigan laws make it unlawful for an employer to:

  • fire employees who serve on jury duty
  • influence an employee's vote
  • fire employees who refuse to take a polygraph test
  • penalize employees for reporting violations of law by employers
  • fire for union activity
  • deny equal employment opportunity
  • violate protections for veterans or reservists
  • retaliate against an employee for filing a safety complaint or a wage complaint
  • fire an employee for having wages withheld for child support or other garnishment
