Restrictions on Firing Employees in Ohio

Employers in Ohio are subject to these state rules that restrict firing employees under certain circumstances.

Ohio laws make it unlawful for an employer to:

  • not permit time off to vote
  • fire an employee for serving on jury duty
  • deny equal employment opportunity
  • retaliate against an employee for filing a workers' compensation claim, safety complaint, or wage complaint
  • violate protections for veterans or reservists
  • fire an employee because of a court order to withhold child support payments from wages or because of garnishment by one creditor in a 12-month period
