Restrictions on Firing Employees in Oregon

Employers in Oregon are subject to these state rules that restrict firing employees under certain circumstances.

Oregon laws make it unlawful for an employer to:

  • require employees to take a polygraph test
  • fire employees who testify under certain labor regulations or minimum wage laws or who testify before the legislature
  • fire an employee because of jury duty
  • fire for union activity
  • deny equal employment opportunity
  • retaliate against an employee for filing a workers' compensation claim, safety complaints, or wage complaints
  • violate protections for veterans or reservists
  • fire an employee for having wages withheld for child support or other garnishment
