Restrictions on Firing Employees in Vermont

Employers in Vermont are subject to these state rules that restrict firing employees under certain circumstances.

Vermont laws make it unlawful for an employer to:

  • discriminate against employees who serve on jury duty
  • fire for union activity; deny equal employment opportunity
  • violate protections for veterans or reservists
  • retaliate against an employee for filing a safety complaint or fair employment practices complaint, or wage complaint
  • require employees to take a polygraph test
  • fire an employee for having wages withheld for child support or other garnishment
