Restrictions on Firing Employees in Washington

Employers in Washington are subject to these state rules that restrict firing employees under certain circumstances.

Washington laws make it unlawful for an employer to:

  • discriminate against employees because of testimony regarding the minimum wage law
  • require an employee to take a polygraph test
  • deny equal employment opportunity
  • violate protections for veterans or reservists
  • retaliate against an employee for filing a wage complaint or fair employment practices complaint, or for exercising family leave rights
  • fire an employee for having wages withheld for child support, or for less than three debts in a 12-month period
