Time Off for Voting Rules in Alabama

Alabama employers must provide employees with time off to vote in accordance with these state rules.

Alabama law provides that employees are, upon reasonable notice to employers, permitted to take time off from work in order to vote in any municipal, county, state, or federal political party primary or election for which the employee is qualified and registered to vote. The employer may specify the hours during which the employee is allowed time off to vote.

Any duly appointed precinct election official is excused from his or her employment without penalty or loss of time for election day only in order to perform the duties of the position to which he or she has been appointed.

Amount of time off allowed: Up to one hour is allowed.

When time off not allowed: Time off to vote rules do not apply if an employee's work hours commence at least two hours after the opening of the polls or end at least one hour prior to the closing of the polls.
