Employers in Virginia must conform with these state rules relating to the employment of minors.

A minor under the age of 16 in Virginia may not be employed in connection with any gainful occupation unless the employer procures and keeps on file and accessible to any authorized person, an employment certificate.

The certificate may be either a work/training certificate or a vacation/part-time employment certificate.

A certificate is not required for volunteer work or work on farms, orchards and gardens, and as otherwise provided by law.
