Employers in Michigan must comply with these state rules regulating smoking in the workplace.
Under the Michigan Clean Indoor Air Act, smoking is prohibited in public places, including places of employment. Certain exceptions apply.
Employers covered: Employers with one or more employees.

Posting requirements: The agency or person who owns, has control of, or operates a public place must clearly and conspicuously post signs stating that smoking in that public place is prohibited or the international symbol that no smoking is allowed and enforce a non smoking policy.
No smoking areas: Smoking is prohibited in public places including any enclosed, indoor area of employment that contains one or more workplaces for one or more persons.
A place of employment does not include a home office where it is the owner's or lessor's residence and he or she is the only employee. Motor vehicles and certain food service establishments are also not places of employment under the non smoking rules.
Smoking is also prohibited in certain food service establishment, certain educational facilities and child care centers.
Permitted smoking areas: There are special exceptions and other provisions for cigar bars, tobacco specialty retail stores and casinos.
