Have No Fear: Steps You Can Take to Prevent Crimes Against Your Business

The month of October is upon us and with it, the spooky fun of Halloween. But few are aware of another important designation for this month. October is the official month for recognizing and celebrating the practice of crime prevention on local, state and national levels. Crime Prevention Month serves as a reminder to small businesses of the importance of ensuring that best practices are in place to prevent crimes that can cause physical or financial harm—or both.

Unlike the mostly innocuous frights associated with Halloween celebrations, crimes against your business are anything but harmless. The types of crimes that may impact your business can vary depending on the type of business you run, where you run it, and whether you have employees. However, while the types of crimes and their severity vary, many crime prevention practices apply to businesses, and in some cases communities, across the board.

The National Crime Prevention Council (NCPC) provides a variety of online resources for preventing crime in the workplace, including tips, training and downloadable resources covering topics such as protecting company information from outsiders, working safely at home and creating a climate of safety.

To further assist you, the following list of articles addresses the various crimes businesses often face, and the effective measures business owners can put into place to deal with these serious threats:

Work Smart

Is your business participating in Halloween promotions and events? If so, tie in the theme of crime prevention and community safety through the use of brochures, small giveaways such as coloring books for kids, or by linking to information on your website. The NCPC website contains numerous suggestions for events and makes available merchandise to promote crime prevention. For example, you can download or purchase printed copies of crime prevention kits or use the electronic media kit to alert the media to your events and activities.

Encourage your chamber of commerce and other associations and businesses to participate in the crime prevention theme for October as well. Keeping businesses and the customers and clients who support them safe fosters goodwill and is a win-win for everyone concerned.
